This session brings together some of the industry’s top leaders and the New Gen young professionals to discuss the top issues surrounding workforce development: attracting and retaining diverse talent, engaging employees, and the changing nature of work in the Space Industry.  Focusing on innovative solutions to enhance opportunities and diversity among employees, this dynamic discussion will address the global space community as stakeholders for building the next generation workforce.

Sonia Phares is Vice President, Engineering and Technology (E&T) for Lockheed Martin Space. In this capacity, she is responsible for leading a 11,500-person workforce comprised of engineers, scientists, technologists and mission operators nationwide. As the principal engineering and technology leader for the Space business area, Sonia oversees the engineering performance on all Space contracts, including support of military, commercial, international and national security missions, as well as maintaining a strategic portfolio of generation-after-next technologies.

Kristen Bredeson is a Talent Acquisition Manager for Ball Aerospace. She is responsible for managing a team of talent acquisition specialists and for bringing best practices, latest techniques and industry trends to the department. In her role, Bredeson coaches and mentors team members, and creates an environment for knowledge transfer and cross-training.

Lisa B. Callahan is Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Civil Space at Lockheed Martin Space and has one of the coolest jobs in and out of this world!  Whether it’s returning humans to the moon, gathering samples from asteroids, exploring the planets of our solar system or peering back in time with the Hubble telescope, Lisa leads the teams who are building and operating the spacecraft that are unlocking the riddles of our universe. In her role, she oversees the development of the next human lunar lander and development of the Orion spacecraft, part of the Artemis program, which will return humans to the Moon and eventually take them to Mars and beyond. Her team develops and operates the robotic spacecraft that are exploring and unlocking the secrets of the solar system and our planet, Earth. Lisa also oversees the development of the GOES weather satellites which are significantly improving the way that forecasters predict severe weather and fires across the western hemisphere. Chances are you or someone you know has benefitted from the forecasts enabled by these satellites. Lastly, her team connects people across the globe with satellite communication solutions.

Ryan is a software engineer for the ATLAS Freedom Platform with experience developing technologies enabling Ground Station as a Service including scheduling, hardware automation, operational systems, and data backhaul. In addition to his technical contributions, Ryan is the post chairman of the ATLAS Space Explorers, a STEM organization focused on exposing students to career opportunities in the space industry through technical projects and entrepreneurship. Ryan holds a B.S. in computer engineering from Marquette University.

Paul Engola is the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) and head of Business Partnerships at Leidos. In this role, he is responsible for implementing and enhancing the human capital strategy for the company’s global workforce, as well as leading Corporate Real Estate and Facilities and Security.

Sarosh Hussain is a Systems Engineer working Human-Systems Integration and Human Factors for Lockheed Martin on the Orion Spacecraft and Human Landing System. In this role, Sarosh is responsible for ensuring human capabilities and limitations are effectively and affordably integrated with system design and development. He employs a set of technical and managerial processes that lead design efforts with human concerns weighed alongside systems concerns.

Dr. Janet L. Kavandi serves as the President of SNC subsidiary Sierra Space in Louisville, Colorado.

Vikki Schiff is the Vice President of Human Resources for Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. She leads all aspects of the company’s HR function including recruitment, employee relations, training, development, compensation and benefits for the company.

Mike Carey, a former USAF Major General with 34 years of experience in satellite and space- related operations is now shaping ATLAS’s future through strategy development, and business planning. Experienced with Air Force Satellite Control Network, Eastern/Western test ranges, the Space Test & Training Range, General Carey has the technical and political prowess to maneuver in the ever-expanding space markets. Mike holds a BA in History from the University of Central Florida, an MPA from the University of Oklahoma, and an MA in National Security & Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
