What it Takes To Be a Great Leader with Master Gunnery Sergeant Scott H. Stalker
Originally aired on: April 18, 2023
Master Gunnery Sergeant Scott H. Stalker has a conversation with Richard Cooper, vice president of strategic communications & outreach for Space Foundation, about how he became Senior Enlisted Leader for U.S. Space Command and what it takes to be a great leader.
“I understand space, and more importantly, I think as a Marine or within the maritime force, it is the ultimate enabler to our operations today,” Stalker said. “It gives us that decisive advantage. I also understand space as warfighter; how it supports us in operations, and hopefully how it deters conflict.”
Stalker clarified that space is not a new domain, and that it has already supported the U.S. military for decades, whether that be GPS, satellite communications, or precision-guided munitions. However, this required largescale training for service members to properly operate and utilize space systems effectively.
“It has to be by design. You have to put a plan together,” Stalker said. “Decide where are the gaps and seams, how can I compliment those, and develop my people?”
