Start Here for Space: New Space Race has Many Entrants

The space domain is becoming more congested and contested. New technologies are rapidly emerging. Barriers to entry are falling. New players – both governmental and commercial – are vying for advantage. At the same time, humanity’s reliance on space activity is becoming more ingrained every day. Once supreme in the space domain, the defense sector is being forced to reassess the role they play in this increasingly critical domain.

To better understand how the domain and the ecosystem are evolving, KPMG International and Space Foundation partnered to talk with industry and defense leaders to explore how the domain is evolving and how to approach some of the immediate challenges we are facing. The new space race was a key topic at 2023’s Space Symposium in Colorado Springs.

Speakers

Eric Brown is the senior director of Mission Strategy for Lockheed Martin Space’s Military Space business. In this role, Mr. Brown works with the U.S. Government and its allies developing space solutions with a focus on the following mission areas: missile warning and defense, military satellite communications (MILSATCOM), position, navigation and timing (PNT), space control, space domain awareness, and tactical missions. Mr. Brown leads Lockheed Martin’s efforts to combine the company’s investments in future capabilities with those of teammates in industry, academia, research labs, and the U.S. Government to establish new architectures responsive to emerging threats to space and missions. Based on the criticality of space to today’s global security, Mr. Brown coordinates across Lockheed Martin’s complete portfolio, which includes fighter aircraft, missiles, and mission systems, to architect the infrastructure needed to enable Joint All-Domain Operations (JADO). As part of this work, he leads Lockheed Martin Innovation Partners, the company’s initiative to engage, accelerate, and onboard non-traditional companies and partners to programs of record.

Jacob leads KPMG’s Global and Australian Space Industry practice and is an Associate Director within KPMG’s Management Consulting practice in Australia. Jacob has worked with a range of clients in the space sector across government, defense and industry in regions including Australia, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and the United States. Jacob has led the development of a number of national space strategies and policies, worked with industry and government clients to export to new markets and provide economic and market analysis and delivered programs with defense clients.

Mandy Vaughn is the CEO and Founder of GXO inc. Prior to founding GXO in 2021, Mandy was the President of VOX Space, having originally joined Virgin Orbit, VOX Space’s parent company, in 2015. As Senior Director of Business Development and Mission Management, she supported business development on the LauncherOne program for both government and commercial customers, and served as mission manager for customers including OneWeb and NASA, in addition to spearheading the creation and registration of VOX Space.
